Giotto, The Lamentation

1304-1306
Fresco
Scrovegni Chapel, Padua, Italy

Giotto includes all the characters seen in any Lamentation: On the right are Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, who took down the body from the cross. Before them in the pink cloak is St. John the Evangelist. The various Mary's are posed around the lifeless body, with the Virgin about to kiss the face of Jesus and the Magdalene sitting at the feet. On the left are the "daughters of Jerusalem" who went with Jesus on the Way of the Cross. Angels grieve in the sky.

This panel is third from the left in the lower register on the north wall. It is preceded by the Crucifixion and followed by the Resurrection.
